How we test pokies

Every number on this site has a source you can open and a date you can see. This page explains which sources we trust, in what order, and how a casino earns a grade.

On this page
  1. Where the numbers come from
  2. How we date things
  3. What we don’t do
  4. How we grade a casino
  5. Corrections

Where the numbers come from

We use sources in this order and stop at the first one that answers the question:

  1. Aristocrat’s own pages. The studio made the game, so its pages about the game come first.
  2. Official documents. Regulators’ standards, laws and approved-game records.
  3. The venue’s own website for anything about a machine on a club or casino floor.
  4. Review sites and catalogues, only when nothing above answers the question, and only with a warning on the page that says how many independent sources agree.

If none of these gives a figure, we write that the figure isn’t published. We never fill a gap with a guess.

How we date things

Each page shows two dates: when it was first published and when it was last checked. The “last checked” date only moves when we reopen the sources, not when we fix a typo. The source list at the bottom of every guide shows the date each source was read.

What we don’t do

  • We don’t publish a return-to-player figure without a source, and we don’t run “500-spin tests” and present them as the game’s maths. A few hundred spins can’t measure a return set over millions.
  • We don’t write about “hot”, “cold” or “due” machines. Every spin is independent.
  • We don’t copy the game’s code or host a copy of it.

How we grade a casino

Before a casino can appear with a grade on this site, it has to pass three checks that we run ourselves with an Australian connection and our own money:

  1. Withdrawal time. We request a PayID withdrawal and time how long it takes to land in the bank account.
  2. Game return shown. We check whether the casino’s lobby or game info shows the version’s return to player.
  3. Lowest deposit. We record the smallest deposit the cashier accepts in Australian dollars.

The grade is out of 10 and relative: the best result we have measured on each check scores 10, the others are scaled against it. A casino that fails the withdrawal check isn’t graded at all. As of 28 September 2026 no casino has been through these checks yet, so no casino carries a grade on this site.

Corrections

When we get something wrong we fix it, change the “last checked” date and, if the correction matters, say what changed. Tell us about an error on the contact page.
